Industrial work camp permit, Bill 28 on agenda as Northern Sunrise County awaits decisions
The Municipal Planning Commission and Council met in late June to discuss a range of development permits, provincial accountability rules, and housing assessments, but minutes of the meetings have not yet been published. The most consequential items under consideration included an industrial work camp permit for Islander Oil & Gas and implementation of new councillor accountability rules under Alberta's Bill 28.
Municipal Planning Commission — June 22
The commission reviewed several development permit applications, including:
- A 640-square-foot recreational cabin (application 26-13) by Doug McCullough at Heart River Golf Course.
- A moved-in trailer over 25 years old (26-14) by Tina Paluck on NE.22.82.19.W5M.
- An industrial work camp (26-15) by Islander Oil & Gas on SE.6.82.12.W5M.
- A moved-in trailer (26-18) by Northern Cross Oilfield on SE.16.84.20.W5M.
- A 14.68-acre farmstead separation subdivision (26MK013) by Limoges Seed Farms.
Commission members also received a presentation on the proposed Mihtha Askyi Data Center. The outcome of these items is not yet available.
Council — June 23
Council discussed implementation of Bill 28, which introduces new rules for councillor accountability, growth and housing, and municipal transparency. The bill would require mandatory disclosure of policing costs on property tax notices and changes to off-site levy bylaws. Council also reviewed:
- A seniors housing demand assessment, presented by the Economic Development Officer.
- A report on playground criteria for Cecil Thompson Park.
- Bylaw B486/26, concerning access to information and protection of privacy.
- A letter of intent for the Peace Regional Energy Alliance expression of interest, which was ratified.

Coming up
The Youth Council Advisory Committee will meet on Thursday, July 9 to plan a Fall Youth Dance and review summer events. The agenda includes a Youth Boat Tour (July 18, 10:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.), a trip to Grande Prairie (July 24), and a Welding Trades Camp in High Prairie (July 21–22). For the Fall Dance, members will consider possible dates, a DJ cost of $500, and attendance caps for youth ages 13–17. The spring 'Buds and Boots' dance drew 57 teens.
