Council agenda sets stage for decisions on ferry funding, borrowing, water restrictions
Courtenay council reviewed major items at its June 24 meeting but has not yet published minutes confirming any decisions. The council will reconvene July 8 to consider a resolution calling for fairer federal funding for BC Ferries, multiple borrowing bylaws for infrastructure, and a staff recommendation for Stage 3 water restrictions.
Recent meeting: June 24 council agenda
The June 24 agenda included:
- Approval of the 2027-2028 RCMP Municipal Policing Contract
- A development variance permit for 877 Cliffe Avenue
- A liquor licence application and good neighbour agreement for 244 4th Street
- Zoning amendment bylaw No. 3226 for 2535 Cumberland Road
- Temporary borrowing bylaw No. 3231 for the 6th Street Bridge
Minutes from that meeting have not yet been published, so no votes or final decisions are available to report.
Upcoming: July 8 council meeting
Council will consider a resolution endorsing MP Gord Johns’ motion for fair federal funding for BC Ferries. The resolution notes that the federal subsidy for BC Ferries is $1.63 per passenger compared to $291 per passenger for East Coast ferries. The council will also request that Courtenay be designated a priority community for the Build Communities Strong Fund, which could help lower development charges for housing infrastructure.
Several loan authorization bylaws will be up for adoption:
- Braidwood Road storm and road projects
- Ryan Road sidewalk construction
- Eastside Firehall
A staff report is recommending Stage 3 water restrictions under the city’s Water Conservation Strategy. The agenda also includes zoning amendment bylaws for 1885 Cliffe Avenue and 2535 Cumberland Road.
Delegations are scheduled from Natural Pastures Cheese Company and the Comox Valley Exhibition.
