Council weighs Mel’s Lane subdivision as committees hear defence pitch and trail updates

A major residential development in Keswick faced a council vote last week, while committees across Georgina heard presentations on defence manufacturing, ATV access to winter roads and environmental plans for a former campground.

Council was poised on June 24 to decide on a draft plan of subdivision and condominium for Mel’s Lane Developments Inc. Staff had recommended approval of the project, which would also require a zoning bylaw amendment to proceed. No vote tallies were available as minutes have not yet been published.

The same meeting held a public forum on a separate application: Fortune Express Investment Corp. is seeking official plan and zoning changes for the Ramada Inn site at 49 Lorne Street in Jackson’s Point.

Economic Development Committee

York Region pitched a defence sector strategy to the Economic Development Advisory Committee on June 22. The presentation outlined ways local manufacturers could pivot into defence work. Central Counties Tourism shared 2025 visitation data, and staff updated the committee on tariffs and progress at the Keswick Business Park. Verbal updates were also provided by the Chamber of Commerce and South Lake Community Futures.

Safe and Active Transportation Committee

The Active Transportation Masterplan and a pilot project allowing off-road vehicles on municipal roads in winter were the focus of a June 23 meeting. Committee members heard an update on the masterplan and the ATV pilot, along with a presentation on planned changes to Woodbine Avenue and Ravenshoe Road. Notices were given for the upcoming spring 2026 closure of Kennedy Road and construction linked to upgrades at the Georgina Water Treatment Plant.

Environmental Advisory Committee

The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority presented environmental and farmland management plans for the former Maple Leaf Estates property during a June 30 committee session. Staff also briefed members on an updated Design Criteria Manual and reported on outcomes from the Pollinator Power Event. The committee adopted minutes from its May 26 meeting.
