Council approves Telus tower, $219K capital budget amendment
Strathcona County council voted unanimously June 23 to support a new cellular tower at a local dog park and to increase the 2026 capital budget by nearly $220,000. The decisions came during a regular council meeting where members also approved community grants, artwork acquisitions, and multiple bylaws.
What council decided
Council approved a letter of support for a Telus cellular tower to be installed at the Deermound Off-Leash Dog Park, located at 23031 Township Road 522. The vote was 9-0.
A $219,835 amendment to the 2026 consolidated capital budget was also approved unanimously (9-0). The amendment funds capital projects not originally budgeted.
Six local organizations will receive a total of $11,525 in community benefit funding. Council approved the grants 8-0.
Thirteen adult artworks were acquired for the county’s collection, and 21 youth artworks were approved for a one-year loan — both decisions passed 9-0.
The name ‘Alice Modin’ was added to the Names Reserve List in a 9-0 vote.
Council passed two bylaws: Bylaw 26-2026 (municipal reserve designation) and Bylaw 27-2026 (environmental reserve designation), each by an 8-0 vote.
Revised policies for Financial Reporting (FIN-001-010) and Proclamations (GOV-001-015) were approved 8-0.
Confidential human resources actions, as detailed in enclosure 2 of the agenda, were approved 9-0.
Coming up
Council will meet again on Tuesday, July 7 to decide on three new off-site levy bylaws that would impose developer fees for roads, water, wastewater, and fire stations in Urban Services, Country Residential, Rural Road (Wards 1–7), North of Yellowhead (Ward 4), and Ardrossan (Ward 5). Other agenda items include approval of the 2027–2030 Strategic Plan, a public hearing on the proposed Waste Management Bylaw 20-2026, and design concept options for the Sherwood Park Senior Centre. A closed-session discussion will cover tax incentive updates and the CAO performance evaluation.
On Tuesday, July 14, the Priorities Committee is scheduled to meet, but the agenda contains no substantive items and is considered procedural only.
