Ignace council weighs $865K engineering contract for wastewater plant overhaul
Ignace town council last week considered awarding an $865,000 engineering contract for major upgrades to the aging Water Pollution Control Plant, with the final vote outcome still pending as official minutes have not yet been released.
Wastewater plant engineering contract on the table
At a special meeting on June 24, council discussed a proposal to hire R.J. Burnside & Associates for engineering services to upgrade the treatment plant, which is approaching the end of its design life. The contract, valued at $865,000, is part of a larger project partly funded by a provincial grant of up to $4,827,125 through the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program, covering 73 percent of eligible costs.
According to the agenda, the upgrades are needed for regulatory compliance, safety, and long-term capacity. Planned improvements include dechlorination, chemical storage, automation, and SCADA system updates. The engineering assignment also includes a lifecycle and phased renewal assessment.
Because the minutes from the June 24 special meeting have not yet been published, it is not known whether council voted to approve the contract or deferred the decision. The item was listed as a resolution for council to decide.
