Regional board to weigh $240K soccer field paving, trail and gym funding
The North Coast Regional District board and its advisory committees met last week with a slate of funding and planning items on the table. No minutes have been published yet, so nothing has been formally decided; the items below are what the bodies will consider.
Regional Board Meeting (Aug. 21)
The most consequential item on the regular board agenda is a proposal to allocate up to $240,000 from the Electoral Area D Parks and Trails Reserve Fund to pave the Tlell Soccer Field parking lot. The board also will consider up to $75,000 for Phase 1 of the Onward Point Trail Enhancement Project, using $59,718.42 in NCPG funds and $15,281.58 in RBA funds.
In addition, the board will weigh a $20,000 RBA funding application from the Sandspit Community Society for the Sandspit Community Gym. Two delegations are scheduled: one on the Groundfish Development Authority season and one on a proposed Rogers telecommunications tower in Tlell. The board also will receive supplier payment reports over $5,000 for June and July 2026.
Electoral Area Advisory Committee (Aug. 19)
The advisory committee's agenda included staff reports on planning for airport lands and a Tow Hill Landshare parkland allocation update. The committee may support cash-in-lieu of parkland acquisition for the Tow Hill project.
New business included recommending correspondence to Telus about transitioning from Mascon infrastructure on Haida Gwaii. The committee also sought direction from Director Young on several Electoral Area D matters: derelict housing, derelict vehicle removal, a name change for Eagle Rd, and a Tlell shoreline erosion DRIF application.
RBA Funding Advisory Committee (Aug. 21)
A separate advisory committee meeting focused on Resource Benefits Alliance and Community Works Fund allocations. The main item was a proposal from the Sandspit Volunteer Fire Department to replace its 1987 rescue/pumper truck using grant funding. The committee also reviewed a Digby Trail concept design proposal, the Community Works Fund (Gas Tax) eligible project categories attachment, and the FIN-04 Community Works Fund Allocation Policy.
