Vernon council eyes RCMP detachment expansion, transit agreement, zoning changes
Vernon City Council considered moving forward with a long-term expansion of the RCMP detachment and authorizing the annual transit operating agreement during its June 22 regular meeting, according to the agenda.
RCMP Expansion
Council discussed directing administration to analyze a 20-year expansion and renovation plan for the Vernon RCMP detachment under what is labelled Option 2, and to begin discussions with funding partners. The item was listed for consideration; no final vote has been published.
Transit Agreement
Council reviewed a proposal to authorize execution of the 2026-2027 BC Transit Annual Operating Agreement. Unspent transit funds would be directed to a reserve. The exact value of the agreement was not stated in the agenda.
Zoning and Policy Changes
Two bylaws were given readings. Zoning Text Amendment Bylaw 6083 received first and second reading, with a public hearing scheduled for July 20, 2026. Official Community Plan Amendment Bylaw 6080 (relating to Polson Village Centre) was given second reading as amended. A notice of motion called for developing a policy that would require lifecycle cost analyses and economic impact assessments for OCP amendment applications.
Development Cost Charge Bylaw
Earlier that day, the Committee of the Whole reviewed a memorandum on Development Cost Charge Bylaw updates, including draft calculations and project sheets. The committee also discussed water restrictions.
